"Children & Others" - extract from a description of a Cameron & Miller performance in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, 1977. By Angela Carter, 1977. "To put it more simply - there was a table, in a clearing, at a place where four paths met. This table was slightly raised off the ground by ropes suspended from the trees, so it had an unnatural, unsettling quality, and it was piled with stones and also pieces of bread. The cloth children (stylised humanoid shapes cut from fabric, already stained and partially stuffed in the course of earlier performances) were suspended among the trees, also from ropes. There were chairs set around the table. Cameron, Miller and Yeco appeared in the distance, on three of the paths that led to the clearing. Cameron, in the green dress and veil she wore for this entire sequence, advanced on the ground, in a kind of tumbling crawl. Miller, in green and covered with the boxes of various jingling, metallic objects that seemed to signify the apparatuses of patriarchy, advanced on foot, uttering cries. Yeco, who first appeared briefly in a dark suit, removed it to now advance towards the table in a white pyjamas, ghost-like. The intense stillness and the slight rustle of the trees gave these entrances a haunted quality. The picnic, or imaginary meal, had a tranced, obsessive quality; there was a curous quality of nostalgia built into the sigh of the table in the middle of the wood, and the chairs, like a picnic in Chekhov, say. There was an enormous distance between the artists, each engaging in rituals of socialisation without any mutual recognition, almost a formal discussion of the spaces between them. Yeco, his head wrappe in a veil, had the air of a risen corpse, a presence, perhaps ominous, perhaps a skeleton at the feast, who Cameron and Miller, Mama and Pala, acknowledged without recognition. They called the children but they could not come, although they held out bread to them." Anúncio de actividade des Shirley & Cameron at 49 Stainton Road, Sheffield S11 7AX.
